A: If you have e-mail and the ability to open attachments, I can send a digital image of the work in progress.
Q: What types of photos work best?
A: Clear and close-up photos taken in natural light work best. The use of a flash fades the colors and darkens all shadows. Animals photos should be taken at their own height (top of the head shots are not very useful). Additional reference photos of the subject are very helpful in capturing likeness, essence and personality and are highly recommended. Be sure to include at least one close-up photo of the subject’s face. You will need to pick the photo to be used for the portrait. Remember, the detail of the portrait is relative to the quality and detail of the photographs you submit.
Q: What if I want two subjects from two different photos?
A: Often I can combine two photos if taken in similar lighting. The comparability of the photos will translate to the quality of the portrait.
Q: How long will my painting last? Will time and light fade the colors?
A: The portraits are painted using high quality pastels on Colourfix lightfast, permanent, acid-free hot press paper coated with pastel primer that holds the paint pigment in place. “Pastel”, which originates from the French word pastiche, which describes how pure, powdered pigment is ground into a paste and shaped using a small amount of gum binder into sticks. Pastels have been used by artists since the 16th Century and are considered the purest and most permanent art medium.
Q: What about size of the finished work?
A: Most of my work is approximately 18” x 24”, but the range can be as small as 11’ x 14” to as large as 24” x 30”. The more subjects in a portrait the larger it needs to be.
Q: Can I choose a background that works with my décor?
A: I will be happy to use background colors and subjects that compliment your surroundings. If a specific background is desired, include photos that you would like used in the portrait.
Q: How long will it take to complete my portrait?
A: Based on current works in progress and orders yet to begin, I can usually produce a final portrait within one month of the order. If the portrait is intended as a gift and timing is important, I can be flexible in completing the work in less time. Timing can be discussed when the order is placed.
